There are many places throughout the island for fishing from the pier or shore.  Coop Bait and Tackle located in Edgartown has a full supply of bait and tackle.  They can advise you of the best places to fish.  508 627 3909.  There are also several fishing charters. One being,  Daily Fishing and Sunset Charters on Party Boat Skipper.  It is a safe and  fully equipped party boat and also available for private fishing and sunset charters.  It leaves out of Oak Bluffs. 508 693 1238.  Other options are Menemsha Blue Charters and North Shore Charters in Chillmark.  Also, Wayfairer Charters out of Edgartown and Fishstick Charters and Done Deal Charters out of Vineyard Haven.

There are also day sails available.  Two of the popular sailing companies are Black Dog Tall Ships and Mad Max.  Black Dog Tall Ships  aboard the schooners Shenandoah and the Alabama offers  afternoon and sunset cruises departing from the Black Dog Wharf in Vineyard Haven (508 693 1699).  Mad Max, a 60 ft catamaran offers state of the art sailing out of Edgartown.  In addition to their daily sails they offer private charters for families and large groups. They are located at 25 Dock St.Edgartown (508 627 7500).

Marthas Vineyard Ocean Sports in Oak Bluffs Harbor has rentals for water skiing, parasailing, Kayaking & boat rentals (508 693 8476). Wind’s Up at 199 Beach Road, Vineyard Haven has a wide variety of water sports equipment, gear, lessons, sales and rentals (508 693 4252).

 

Biking

Biking is one of the most popular activities for visitors to the Island.

Biking is one of the best ways to explore the natural beauty of the Island.  There is a network of paved bike paths and trails thoughout the Island. There are bikes for the whole family available for rental.  Most of the bike shops deliver right to your location and pick-up as well.  Maps with bike routes are available at most of the shops

Hiking

There are over 100 walking trails open to the public on the island.  One of our favorite is the 600 acre Long Point Wildlife Refuge on the South Side of the island.  There is a woodland trail, an ocean front beach and accessible pond.   You cans swim, hike or Kayak here.  Long Point has something for everyone.  The trails are an easy walk through woods and sandy open areas.  Another family favorite is the two miles of trails thru Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary and around the shores of Sengekontacket pond .  It is an easy walk with wide flat trails and great  for families with small children.  

 

Lighthouses

Marthas Vineyard Light Houses still stand today, doubling as automated navigation signals and popular spots for visitors

 

Gay Head Lighthouse

Located at the Gay Head Cliffs at Aquinnah. it is the oldest of the 5 lighthouses.  It went into service in 1799.  In 2015 the  lighthouse was relocated 129 ft to a safer location away from an eroding cliff.  The lighthouse is open to the public for tours.

Edgartown Lighthouse and East chop Lighthouse are also open to the public.  For more information visit, www.mvmuseum.org.  West Chop Lighthouse is owned by the US Coast Guard and is not open to the public.  Cape Pogue Lighthouse is the most remote lighthouse located on Chappaquiddick and is hard to reach.

 

 

Katama Airfield / Right Fork Diner

One of the oldest grass strip airports in the United States

Established in 1924 and has retained its original look.  You can watch small planes take off and land.  There are also  Bi Plane rides with an open cockpit pit for site seeing.

Right Fork Diner is located at the airport.  This diner serves breakfast, lunch and early dinner with kid friendly food.  It is fun to watch the planes take off and land.  The diner and the airport close at sunset conforming to the rules established many years ago.

West Tisbury
Farmers Market

Located at the Grange Hall

Held on Wednesdays and Saturdays during the Summer.  All local produce,  baked goods and flowers.  

The Farmers Market was Founded in 1974 by a  group of hippies. The West Tisbury Farmers Market is Martha’s Vineyard’s oldest, largest, and finest open air market located at the Grange Hall. 

There more than 30 commercial farms on the Vineyard and most can be found at the farmers market.

The Grange hall in West Tisbury is a historic post-and-beam building that was built in 1859.

 

Working Farms

Island Alpaca

Visit a working Alpaca farm.  Meet the Alpacas and browse the farm store.  Alpacas were first imported to the U.S. in 1984 from Peru, Bolivia and Chile. The Alpacas have a gentle humming, playful disposition , adaptability and minimal care requirements.  They are great pets as well as an excellent investment.  They are on average 36 inches tall and weigh about 150 pounds.  Their life span is about 20 years.    When you visit this farm you can explore the life style associated with these unique animals. Located in Oak Bluffs.

Golf Clubs on the Island

If you are looking to add a say of golf to your vacation.  You are  in luck.

Mink Meadows Golf Club is s semi private facility in Vineyard Haven with ocean views.  For reservation or info call 508 693 0600. Farm Neck Golf Club is located in Oak Bluffs . Both President Clinton and President Obama have played at this golf course frequently.  After playing the course you can enjoy a meal at Farm Neck Cafe.  For reservation and info call 508 627 5343

 

Fourth of July Parade and Fireworks Celebration in Edgartown

Traditional Parade and Fireworks

Special celebration.  The parade begins in late afternoon followed by fireworks on the harbor front.  Fireworks display begins as darkness falls.  Free and all are welcome. 

Grand Illumination Night Oak Bluffs​

The Grand Illumination of the Oak Bluffs Campground.  The gingerbread cottages are adorned with colorful Chinese and Japanese lanterns which are lit at dark.  Most of these lanterns have been handed down in families thru generations. This tradition dates back to the 19 Century.  It is preceeded by a sing along at the Tabernacle.  This event occurs mid August.
